Google it … NOT
Going somewhere? Need map directions? Search on Google Map!
Need to get a website translated instantly? Use Google Translate!
Don’t know how to spell a word? Google it!
Seriously, why even bother with a dictionary when it only takes 2 seconds with Google
Today, Google has truly become an inseparable part of our daily lives.
So, imagine if the contents of Google were censored or banned in Malaysia, or worse still, completely inaccessible! – it does seem like the worst nightmare right? But the truth is Google’s services are censored or blocked in 25% of the countries that they offer their services to.
Being one of the highest populated countries, China censors Google’s search contents and blocks some of its online services completely, including YouTube. It really makes one wonder if this is really the best solution moving forward? Google is one of the most useful research tools available for most of us today, and a huge number of internet users depend on Google for their daily quest for information.
One can understand and will support necessary censorship of internet content, but if it goes beyond the reasonable censorship scope (be it intentionally or not), it potentially violates the citizens’ right to access scientific, educational, environmental, energy and other useful information.
Thus, it is important to have tools that can provide precise control of which information is acceptable, and which is objectionable. Be it a company, a university or a government agency, a dedicated web filtering device such as the Barracuda Web Filter (link to website) will provide that vital control enforcing the organization’s own working culture and practices.
